Background of the Study
Traditional greetings in Nigeria are rich with pragmatic markers that convey social hierarchy, respect, and cultural identity. This study investigates the role of pragmatic markers in Nigerian cultural dialogues, focusing specifically on traditional greetings. Such greetings often employ elaborate honorifics, indirect expressions, and culturally specific intonation patterns that serve as signals of politeness and social affiliation (Adeleke, 2023). In many Nigerian communities, greetings are not merely salutation but an essential part of social ritual that helps establish rapport and reinforce cultural norms. By analyzing recordings of greetings in diverse settings—from formal ceremonies to everyday interactions—this study aims to identify common pragmatic devices and assess their impact on effective communication. The research will use discourse analysis to explore how these markers vary across regions and contexts, highlighting the interplay between language and culture in preserving tradition and social order (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although traditional greetings are central to Nigerian cultural dialogues, there is limited research focusing on their pragmatic components. Existing studies tend to examine greetings as cultural rituals without analyzing the linguistic markers that facilitate social interaction (Adeleke, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how specific pragmatic devices contribute to effective communication and cultural cohesion. Without systematic analysis, the role of indirect expressions, honorifics, and intonation in greeting exchanges remains underexplored. This study seeks to address this deficiency by providing a detailed evaluation of pragmatic markers in Nigerian traditional greetings, thereby informing strategies for cultural preservation and effective communication (Chinwe, 2024).
